37. St. Abbs's Head - BOX RETIRED
Difficulty of Trail: Easy peasy
Length of Trail: 2 - 5 miles

THIS BOX HAS BEEN RETIRED

Make your way to the St. Abb's Head National Nature Reserve operated by the National Trust for Scotland. There is a small fee for parking; otherwise the area is free.

This is a spectacular three-mile roundtrip hike along the cliffs of St. Abb's Head. The cliffs are renowned for the seabirds that nest during the summer months. And the scenery is incredible. Because the cliffs are so exposed to the elements, the letterbox is located in a sheltered area near the start of the hike. But you would be seriously remiss if you did not take advantage of the hike after finding the letterbox. Trust us on this one.

THIS BOX HAS BEEN RETIRED

To the letterbox. After parking, walk down to the visitor's center, and after viewing the exhibit and perhaps getting a bite to eat in the tearoom and visiting the shops, take the walking path to St. Abb's Head. This can be a bit difficult to locate, but basically it is to the left of the road that leads into the town of St. Abbs.

Ahead of you on the left will be a small pine woods. On your right will be a wall separating the path from the road. Soon you will be facing another wall with some signage on it. One of the signs indicates the path turns to the left.

Turn left here and take 35 steps. Stop. To your left, on a diagonal at approximately 10 o'clock, you will see a single tree, a double tree, and then another single tree. If you take 10 steps in this direction, you will be at the third (single) tree in this line. The box is around the back of this tree, nestled fairly deeply under a soft layer of pine needles.

After you stamp in and carefully replace the box, your real scenic journey begins. Continue on the path as it heads out to the cliffs and walk along them (the usual cautions about cliffwalking apply). You will come to the St. Abb's Head lighthouse. After exploring it, you can either retrace your steps or take a more inland route back to your car.

We hope you enjoy this special place as much as we did.
