13. Midlothian 2
Location: Gore Glen
Difficulty of Trail: Easy Peasy
Length of Trail: Less than 1 mile
Accessibility: This trail is not accessible to bicycles, pushchairs and wheelchairs.
Area: Midlothian

From the Sheriff Hall roundabout at the end of the Edinburgh bypass take the A7 heading towards Galashiels. After about 3 miles you'll get to a set of traffic lights at crossroads (Gorebridge B704 left, Shell Garage on right). Go straight through this and continue on for just under a mile, you will see the parking area (on right) for Gore Glen Woodland Park.

  1. Take path at far end of car park (North West). Then following the brown marker post take the path heading downhill.
  2. At next brown marker follow arrow down steep hill (North West). Then go down steps.
  3. At the bottom of the steps you will need to re-enter the park (through gate).
  4. At fork in path take the track that goes over the river and continue to follow the main path along the river.
  5. At next fork in the path take the path heading West (past old water house).
  6. The path turns left at a small pebble beach. Across the river you will se a large boulder then immediately to the right you will see a much smaller boulder. It's this boulder you want to head for.
  7. You now need to cross the river, you will find quite a few shallower areas that can easily be crossed in wellies.
  8. Standing on top of the small boulder you will see a small tree just at the river edge, underneath this tree there is a small crevice where you will find the letter box.

Please take care when retreiving the box (don't fall into the river!). You can easily see the crevice underneath the small boulder when standing on the other side of the river.
To hide the box we placed several stones on top of it, you will need to remove these first to get to the box. Please replace the stones after putting the letter box back in it's hole as this is a popular area for kids to play in the summer.

For a different route back you can either go through North wood (although it will add an extra 1/2 mile to your journey), or go up past Vogrie house (there's an Adventure play area for the kids + icrecream in the summer months).

Additional Information:
If you have young kids and you don't fancy all climbing back up the hill it is possible to bring the car down and park just outside the gate (clue 3). To do this turn left out of the carpark (going back to Gorebridge junction). You will come across a row of houses on your right, just across from them you will see a small road. Turn left onto this road, at the next juction turn left down the hill, under the bridge. There is space here for about 3-4 cars (depending on how people park).

For this box, you will need:

  • An inkpad
  • Something to write with
  • A compass
  • Gloves
  • Wellies
  • A towel or kitchen paper for cleaning mucky stamp, box or hands.
  • A towel in the summer months as the stream/pebble beach is a wonderful place to play!
